Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?  This is always the most interesting question.  We recommend that the first step is to take action and sign up for the beginner group class that interests you the most.  If you are completely new to ballroom dancing and have no specific dance in mind, we have a Ballroom 101 group class where we feature the basics of 3 of the most popular ballroom dances; Waltz, Cha Cha and Foxtrot.  Here you learn some basic steps, a few moves, proper frame including lead/follow technique; more than enough to give you the confidence to get you on the dance floor.  And we are always glad to talk to you and help you decide how to best start.  Just give us a call or use the contact us form on our website.

How do I know what level of class to take?  Our instructors are glad to help you determine the level of dance class to take.   This determination is made from discussions we have with you about your past lessons and experience.  Our instructors will also evaluate your actual dance once in a class and work with you to see if a different level of class is more appropriate to your skills, and also help you develop a program of instruction and practice to meet your dance goals.

How many students are needed to hold the class and do I need a partner?  4 or more to hold the class and NO, you do not need a partner.   Due to same day registrations (walk ins), generally there isn’t a way to know ahead of time how many people will be in a class, so we almost always hold at least the first class and go from there.  In addition, once we see the composition of students, we work hard to assure that your class has an equal number of leaders and followers to maximize you’re dancing during the class with a partner.  If the number is uneven we switch partners regularly throughout the lesson, so generally no one is ever without a partner for more than one rotation.   As I mentioned: We  rotate partners regularly to help each dancer best learn lead/follow, but if you are interested in staying with your partner only, as sometime couples feel more comfortable with, NOT A PROBLEM of course.

How do I progress?  In addition to group classes we recommend a combination of private lessons, practice and dancing for fun.   We offer group classes at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels allowing you to move up in a group setting as you improve.   Private lessons allow you the individual attention necessary to focus on detail and technique.   Practice builds, reinforces and improves the muscle memory you develop when learning your dance techniques steps and patterns and is necessary in order to repeat your success.  On Sunday evenings, from 6 to 8, we open our studio floor just for those who want to practice.  Feel free to bring your music, or we will provide it.  You can practice individually, with a partner or connect with a partner when you arrive.  Finally dancing is very social and you will meet the nicest people at social dances.    Every Saturday evening, from 8:30 until 11, we host a social dance featuring a mix of Latin and Ballroom music. Light refreshments are served, and the dance is preceded at 7:30 – 8:15 by a drop in group lesson that varies each week.   There is always someone nice to dance with.  See our calendar for details.

What is the appropriate dress?  Dressy casual.

What shoes should I wear?  We recommend dance shoes. There are many kinds and styles from Dressy to Casual, from Latin to Dance Sneakers.  We can help you purchase them when you are ready.   If you are wearing non dance shoes we recommend shoes that have leather soles and if not, we require that your shoes have NON marking soles and heels.
